When I first asked Jason to help with the design for Camp Spoonhowopic, I showed him some designs I was thinking about. Of course, the words “Allegany State Park” appeared in some of them. Jason politely protested, since we, after all, live in Allegheny County. It also hit a nerve with Heather P., who wrote:
[...] is allegheny spelled wrong? i don’t wanna come off like a hater or anything like that, but my inner spelling bee nerd never sleeps.
It turns out that there are three spellings for the counties, rivers, parks, and forests with that name, depending mostly on what state you are in. New York writes Allegany, Virginia and North Carolina write Alleghany, and Pennsylvania writes Allegheny. Luckily, it’s pronounced the same way everywhere.

Don’t forget Pittsburgh which is located in Allegheny County! But, here in New York State there is Allegany County. Although in Catt. Co. there is Allegany New York which is just outside Olean. But, as you noted the Allegheny River is spelled the same way as Allegheny National Forest. Those two spellings are federal ways of spelling it (ever wonder why this is the only spelling in the spell checker?). This spelling is always a big discussion! Wait till you see how the Allegheny is spelled in Seneca!
